badass. in a nerdy kind of way.

change that ugly twitter for mac (2.0.2) icon

what’s up with twitter for mac changing it’s icon with each release so far? it’s gone from black - to blue - to ugly. here’s how you can change it:

  1. quit twitter for mac
  2. remove twitter for mac from your dock
  3. open terminal
  4. cd /Applications/Twitter.app/Contents/Resources
  5. sudo mv Icon3.icns Icon.icns
  6. type in your password
  7. open twitter

note: you can replace Icon3.icns with Icon2.icns (in step 5) if you liked twitter for mac’s initial black icon. Icon3.icns was twitter for mac 2.0.1’s blue icon.

my [apple] predictions for 09.09.09

so, apple’s having a media event tomorrow, here are my predictions:
  • everything with the word ipod in it (besides the nano shuffle) will have a camera in it.
  • itunes 9 with: social aspects: facebook and twitter “what i’m listening to” sharing capabilities, and “cocktail” - which’ll be a snazzy’ier way to get an albums digital booklet - that people already get on itunes that no one cares about.  built in quicktime X support for 10.6+ users.
  • the lower end and higher end appletv will get a hard drive capacity boost - both models will be $30 cheaper.
  • the beatles songs finally come to itunes.  a U2’ish beatles ipod with all the songs on it.

tweetie (for mac)

this weeks pick, tweetie (for mac), is my first “pick from the future”.

for those of you looking for an alternative desktop twitter client, ahem…cough…cough…tweetdeck…ahem….cough…ahem, tomorrow may be the day you’ve all been waiting for.  @atebits, the creators of my favorite twitter iphone application, tweetie, are releasing a mac client tomorrow!

now, i haven’t even seen tweetie for mac, but if it’s anything like it’s big brother, it’ll be an instant success.  for a preview of tweetie, check out their preview here.

check back tomorrow for my full insight.

update: am i the only person who doesn’t like this app? it seems like saved searches in tweetie will just end up all over the place - i like the organization of your searches in tweetdeck.  the use of core animation is slick. very nice incorporation of the “post with tweetie” bookmarklet - that automagically opens up tweetie’s “new tweet” box. i still think tweetdeck > tweetie (for mac).  maybe this shouldn’t have been my pick of the week…

time machine editor

do you backup? do you use time machine? do you hate that, by default, it does a backup every hour? time machine editor gives you more control over your time machine backups that apple somehow left out of time machine’s preferences.  the editor will let you set two schedule options: standard interval or calendar intervals.

the interval setup will tell time machine to backup every x hour(s).  pretty simple.  but, still not as configurable as i’d like time machine to be.

calendar intervals gives you a lot more flexibility such as:

backup daily/weekly/monthly at so and so time.  you can also mix these options, say backing up at 4am daily, a weekly backup on monday at 8 am, and finally doing a monthly backup on the 4th day of the month at 10am.  not sure why you’d want such a backup, but time machine editor will setup you up that way if you’d like.

for me, i don’t want my backups interrupting me during the day.  so i created a calendar interval event, to have daily backups at 4am.

time machine editor also provides two even options including: backup when disks are mounted, and backup when the computer wakes up from sleep.  personally, i’ve got the first option checked, and the second option not checked.

also, time machine editor’s settings, will no update in the time machine system preferences pane.  just trust that any configuration change within the editor, will work.

time machine editor is free, and available here.
